wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<p>Located&nbsp;1.5 hours west of Toronto.\u202fWashington Creek,&nbsp;a 19.5 square&nbsp;kilometre&nbsp;coldwater stream system within the Grand River watershed,&nbsp;is home&nbsp;to native brook trout and plays a critical role in the health of the surrounding ecosystem.&nbsp;Since&nbsp;80 per cent of this area\u2019s land&nbsp;is used for agriculture production,&nbsp;the five wetland projects implemented in Washington Creek&nbsp;were&nbsp;designed and constructed specifically for the purpose of flood attenuation.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thenatureforce.com\/assets\/2025\/01\/Willms_NF-1-Year-Post-1024x768.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1210\" Canada<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>These wetlands&nbsp;represent&nbsp;almost six restored acres (2.4 hectares) that will also work to improve water quality and provide wildlife habitat.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/iwwr.ducks.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ducks Unlimited Canada\u2019s research institute<\/a>&nbsp;will be&nbsp;analyzing stream monitoring data collected monthly in the Washington Creek watershed. This data will help to&nbsp;demonstrate&nbsp;the&nbsp;significant&nbsp;impacts of using small wetlands as natural infrastructure for flood attenuation on a much broader scale.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-style-default has-superbfont-large-font-size is-layout-flow wp-container-core-quote-is-layout-9da7d901 wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\" style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--superbspacing-xlarge);margin-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--superbspacing-xsmall);margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--superbspacing-xlarge);margin-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--superbspacing-xsmall);padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--superbspacing-xsmall);padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--superbspacing-xsmall)\">\n<p>Nature Force is a unique collaboration between Canada\u2019s insurance industry and Ducks Unlimited Canada to create innovative solutions for resilient communities to protect Canadians. Natural infrastructure like wetlands, help reduce flooding, and with the support from the Nature Force initiative, we\u2019re harnessing the power of nature to protect communities and conserve ecosystems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-primary-hover-color has-text-color has-link-color has-superbfont-xsmall-font-size wp-elements-244e64bf72a331d04650924f827bde76\">&#8211; Nick Krete, conservation program specialist, Ducks Unlimited Canada<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Working with local landowners<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A&nbsp;crucial&nbsp;part of this&nbsp;project was finding landowners who were open to partnering on these restorations. Since much of the Washington Creek watershed is made up of rural private property, our team worked closely with local landowners. We were fortunate to find several landowners\u202f\u202fwho were eager to&nbsp;participate&nbsp;\u2013 including&nbsp;neighbours&nbsp;Dennis Willms and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ducks.ca\/stories\/the-great-lakes-st-lawrence\/tradition-gofton-farm-washington-creek\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Randy Gofton<\/a>. The wetland restoration projects on their properties focused on areas identified as idle land. They also rolled up their sleeves to plant 300 nursery stock trees throughout the wetland areas. These trees will play a key role in the ecosystem, contributing both to the landscape\u2019s beauty and its biodiversity.\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\" style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--superbspacing-xlarge);margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--superbspacing-xlarge)\">\n<p>Definity is proud to be a member of Nature Force.
